Ady,

I am an SEO consultant so I can help you with your question.

There are a couple of issues here.

1) Adding pages or updating existing pages will probably help your overall search engine rankings. Search engines prefer fresh content in general, and also prefer sites that are being updated on a regular basis. Old content might not be current, correct or relevent anymore so search engines and human beings tend to shy away from it.

Additionally, if you are getting traffic to old pages it may mean that the search engines like your site overall which means that it is unlikely you are going to mess anything up by changing your content somewhat.

2) On the flip side, your current pages might be optimized, even accidentally, for certain search terms. You should find out which search terms people are using to reach your pages via a statistics program like Google Analytics. If those are important search terms then you should create your news pages in such a way that they are optimized for those search terms too.

You may find, however, that some of these search terms are irrelevent to your site or are too general, which might explain your low conversion rates. In that case there is not such a big problem about losing them.

Plan of action:

Since there are some risks and some benefits to updating your site, you can protect yourself by updating a little at a time and tracking the results. If you see you are suddenly losing traffic and/or sales then revert back to the original pages and then try again. Or try adding pages to the site without removing any of the older content and see what that does for you. If the new pages do well on the search engines then you can try autoforwarding from the old pages to the new ones. But don't actually remove the old pages completely.

Since good, fresh content is almost always a good thing and since your conversions are low you really have very little to lose and much to gain by going forward and upgrading your pages. I have found that even massive changes to an existing site do not cause much change in search engine traffic, so your search engine traffic will not change much in either direction. Hopefully your conversions will increase though so it will probably work out well for you.

Nice idea! Your idea actually sparked something I've had on a backburner for quite some time.
I am working with a company that has an old website that ranks well on search engines (niche market) but has outdated products and information - so even though visitors come, conversions are really low. I've thought about updating the site (like in my "free time"), but am not sure how to balance existing high search engine ranking and updating the content for higher conversions.

Do you have any experience or advice as to how to change content on an outdated website without loosing the high search engine ranking?

Thanks Everyone..

My eyeballs are falling out with exhaustion creating these, so happy to know at least some people are watching :)

umm.. whatever your name is SEO (spammer?) yeh I agree about the subscribers. What a bonus. Feel like emailing them on my behalf and splitting the revenue?

Keeping the subscribers was probably the most valuable part of your "website flipping" idea.
