These are very good points and I'll be keeping them in mind for the future - when the need will be great and the time will be NOW.

Thanks!

We are just starting a new brand from scratch right now, backed by 10 years web experience.

I will leave for a vacation in Hawaii, to envision a brand new autopilot strategy - suppose something like on-demand consulting services, provided through social marketing.

Cheers!

Andrea there doesn't seem to be much demand for part 2 of my above comment, but just to stop you constantly interrupting me on skype demanding it "NOW" and for anyone out there expecting it who lacks balls, here it is ...

So we have our categories:

1. People need it now! examples:- Anti-Spyware software
2. People want it! - Example: Wine
3. People need it. - Example Life insurance

I can think of more but I want to keep things simple, what examples can you think of?

So right first of lets say I was an unemployed programmer and I noticed that there are a good number (1000+) of people searching for anti-spyware software on a weekly basis.

I could go and create my anti-spyware software right there and then.

But that would be silly, here's why ...

The next and vital step is to look at what the majority of other providers are doing in this market. What are they charging? What do they provide? What is their unique selling propositions?

Also it would be beneficial to find out what other people are saying about other products you could use forums or yahoo answers for this maybe people will be whining about how a particular program sucks or how a particular program is fantastic.

Then I can go out and plan and produce the first edition of my software - knowing before it's created why it will have the great things all the other popular products have and why it will have the advantage 'cause the data collected from forum's will reveal what really pisses people off e.g. the program could be updated forever instead of having to pay for updates and so on and so on ...

Next I would look at how these products are marketed ... Then I would ask how could I could market my product in a different but superior way?

Also I would start to conclude what the overall marketing trends are in this particular market ... e.g. do most companies use long-form sales letters? do most companies use SEO? do most companies use adwords? Then I would look at what they are not doing ...

Often people in business are so single minded that they look at their competitors within their same industry for inspiration for their marketing. This strategy sucks.

A strategy that doesn't suck is looking at the marketing strategies of other companies in other markets and observing what works, why it works etc ...

So going back to the spyware example if most companies are using adwords but they are not using social marketing or video marketing I would look at using alternative methods ...

Remember what earl nightingale said:

"When you have no successful example to follow simply look at around at what everyone else is doing and do the opposite ..."

So I would then start to build a product marketing plan, and devise my marketing methods to excite people about my product and inform them why it's better than the rest using different, unique and superior ways to get to prospects ...

I could go into the tactics of how to sell and market but thats not important as Morpheus said to Neo in the first Matrix movie ...

"There is a difference between knowing the path and walking it."

Having lost my money and domains it would be a challenge to market but I strongly believe after having developed points of reference and analysing my competitor's marketing I could utilize free and low-cost methods very well ...

I could finish here, but I want to offer one last thing ...

The above example assumes that I am capable of writing software, but in reality I am not. So what I want to get it here is what if there were no markets I felt I could attack that were linked to my strengths in the "I NEED IT NOW CATEGORY"?

This is likely.

So I would look at getting into marketing "I want it" products.

But I would make sure my marketing convinces people that they do not want what I can sell them, I would make it my mission to convince them that they NEED my product ... If I could do that the money will roll in, the ferrari will be back in my garage and the swimming pool will be back to normal operation ...

Until next time. Keep it real.
