Harlan Kilstein and I first made contact about 4 or 5 months ago. Harlan wanted to know if I, as an advertised speaker at Affilicon, could help him secure a speaking spot on their agenda. He knew he would be spending his own money, paying for his own expenses, and selling NOTHING from the stage.
It wasn’t a hard sell, as his Bio speaks for himself.
When he arrived, I spent a good deal of time with him both at the convention, but mostly post the convention for a few days in Jerusalem. The advantage to being in close proximity to successful people, is being able to soak up their good habits… sort of like osmosis, as you watch them in the process. So, while we spoke, a lot more was going on while we worked in silence side by side, as I just kept an ear and eye open, silently WATCHING his moves.
I learned a lot from Dr. Kilstein, as did a lot of people attending his speeches, and generous freebie events he held in Jerusalem.
I learned a LOT MORE about benefits (it really will change the way I write copy from now on), I learned about having a business instead of a website (it really will change the way I operate from now on), and I learned about aggressive outsourcing to fill those specific needs that turn ideas into cash (it really will change the way I outsource from now on)….
but if I had to single out what is the #1 secret to Kilstein’s success?
He is FAST. He is QUICK. He is DECISIVE.
For a woman, who can sometimes be overly analytical, and definitely indecisive, it was scary, but also extremely liberating to see.
I decided that I would write this blog post and not worry about how I could have said it much better, or do I have the perfect image to complement the text, or should I run it by a friend first for edits as I often do.
Nope. I am just writing and publishing, and that, yes that too… will really change the way I make things happen from now on.
Thanks Harlan (also for the balance bars!)

Your gender is irrelevant to your ability to be decisive or quick.
Why do you sell yourself short like this:
“He is FAST. He is QUICK. He is DECISIVE.
For a woman, who can sometimes be overly analytical, and definitely indecisive, it was scary, but also extremely liberating to see.”
Seriously – WTF?

I am definitely a philosopher / thinker vs fast actor, too, Andrea. But then – so are many of the men I know. Decisive, quick actions VS more plodding thoughtfulness is not gender based – I agree w/ Shira. However – the way you’ve put it here IS the classic perception out there of masculine / feminine qualities, whoever it is who possesses them. So it makes total sense for you to attribute those qualities to your gender. In any event, meeting Dr. K is not something I will soon forget. Lots of food for thought.

Shira,
You could be right.
and you know, as my fingers were flying across the keyboard, I was actually thinking outloud – “you know Andrea, you do not usually use terms like that, they make you puke when others do (as a woman)” – because I don’t even think like that, and I so don’t group myself as being a typical ‘woman’. (maybe I will get in trouble for that statement as well)….
However, the point, as made clear in the post, was to get this out quickly…the woman part would have 100% been cut in the edits.
and you know what? Maybe I said it wrong, and maybe it sounds gender based, and sure I know a heck of a lot of guys who are slow and analytical as I WHIZ by them… but the impression I picked up from his actions was something decidedly MALE.
And there are differences between Men and Women.

There are differences between men and women – I just don’t think fast, decisive and quick are one of them.
Oh yes, and thank you Harlan for your interesting and helpful information. I actually have been using some of what I found on your site in regular life and have found it frighteningly helpful…

Aaa, so that’s how Harlan ended up at affilicon!
He really was the start and stole the show at affilicon.. not to mention in the inbal and in Mamilla.
So I need to thank you for bringing him to israel… he really changed the way i think!
Shimshon (June 21st, 2009 at 11:45 am )
Andrea, the country owes you one for helping Harlan to come. It was extremely educational to listen to him at the Mamilla and Inbal events. As you know, my better half was the one who got to go to Affilicon, but I know he did a great job there too.
The man’s breadth of knowledge in the marketing field is definitely impressive. Perhaps what is more important is his winning attitude. I wonder how many people were paying attention to that in addition to the marketing tips he was giving. That winning attitude might be even more valuable than the tips.

Shimshon,
Have you implemented any of the wisdom yet? what’s with the rainbow in the logo there?

You are correct. Getting your self close to successful people makes you see and somewhat get infected with their good habits

I am a woman of action, and I always like to keep all in my hands. I think that is very important that we always ascend over the situation and that the government situation. For this is a necessary practice a long time.

Also makes me puke when people get so caught up with not being sexist that they don’t admit truths.
My wife is far better at cleaning than me.
I am far better at changing light-bulbs and woodwork.
My wife is better at interior design.
I am better at computers.I am much quick and more decisive.
She is more meticulous and caring.B
Shira (June 28th, 2009 at 2:24 am )
Ben,
My husband is better at cleaning than me (by far)
I’m better at some DIY (he’s an engineer – the lights in our backyard was all done by him – all of the painted furniture and such was done by me)
My husband is better at some things with computers, I’m better at others. He is more meticulous.
I’m quicker and more decisive.
We’re both caring.Just because your list are truths for you does not make them true for everyone.

I think that the most important sentence is:
“I learned about having a business instead of a website”
